Since 2005, Turkel Design has been Dwell Magazine’s lead architectural partner in creating prefabricated homes that embody Dwell’s vision of modern design. In 2015 Turkel Design launched the Axiom Series of prefab houses, and has recently expanded the collection – now offering eleven distinct designs, starting at around $700.000.

These homes feature bold design, resource conservation, and energy efficiency. Each design can be customized to match just about every site, climate, and mode of living, while their panelized system of construction assures a predictable building process.

Our Process

Option 1

Choose a Standard Design

Option 2

Modify a Standard Design

Option 3

Design a Custom Home

Choosing a standard plan is the most efficient way to live in a Modern Mountain Homes / Turkel Design.

If one of the house-designs in our collection seems to suit your needs and your site, the rest of the process is pretty straightforward.

First, we create a 3D site model and show you how the house fits on your site. Then together, we will choose the finishes – siding, flooring, cabinetry, etc – for the house using this interactive 3D model online.

Once that’s done, we will prepare working drawings showing every detail of the house and site. We will use those drawings to work up a fixed price for producing and erecting the panelized, weathertight shell of your house. We will take those plans to a contractor in your area, who will give you a price for the site work and the foundation, and for all the work needed to add the mechanical services, interior walls, and all the finishes. Don’t worry, we can help you find and vet two contractors, so that you have competitive bids.

Once you’re ready to proceed, we’ll build the shell in a factory and erect it on your contractor’s foundation. Your contractor will then use our working drawings to finish your home and get it ready for you to move in.

Modifying a standard plan offers design flexibility coupled with predictability and control.

If one of our house-designs has features that suit you and your site, we can modify it until it matches your desires perfectly.

The design process will begin once we decide which fixed-fee design service is right for you. We will have a series of interactive, online meetings with you during which we will fly through the 3D model of your house on the site. We will stretch and pull and shift the spaces of your new home until we get it just right. Once we’ve agreed on a design, we’ll proceed as in Option 1:

For some clients, the most appropriate solution is to create a custom design.  A comprehensive process and personalized services allow for the highest degree of design flexibility.

Once we have visited your site and assisted you in developing your building program, we will research the local regulatory and climatic design criteria and create a detailed 3D digital model of your building site.

We will then guide you through the design process from initial organizational and massing studies, through schematic design, design development, and construction documents, incorporating your input at every stage.

Materials for your custom home can be provided by a manufacturer or by your local builder.  If a pre-manufactured approach is deemed to be the most appropriate solution, off-site fabrication and site preparation can occur in parallel.  The pre-fabricated components will be delivered to your site, assembled, and your new home will be finished per your specifications.
